Someone has brought snacks back from a trip, and the group chat is collecting bubble-tea orders. You enjoy your colleagues. You also know that you have already said yes to several things you did not especially want.

Then comes the familiar line: “Just one more. Don’t be so strict.” Suddenly, choosing what to eat feels like choosing whether to be friendly.

You can appreciate an offer, enjoy shared food and still decide what works for you. Having a few words ready can make that moment less awkward.

Work out what is making the decision difficult

Food choices happen in a setting. Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust identifies social situations and other people offering food as examples of external eating cues. That does not mean every offer leads to overeating, or that colleagues are doing anything wrong.

A useful question is: “Would I like this, or am I worried about saying no?” Perhaps you want the cake and would enjoy eating it with everyone. Perhaps you are comfortably full. Perhaps you are hungry, but the snack is standing in for a lunch you never had.

If afternoon hunger is a regular part of the picture, our lunch-checking guide can help you look at that separately. You do not need to turn every food decision into a test of self-control.

Choose a response that matches what you want

If you want some: “Yes please, I’d enjoy a small piece.” You do not have to apologise for joining in or announce that you will make up for it later.

If you do not want it: “Thanks for thinking of me. I’m happy without one today.” A friendly thank-you is enough; there is no need to give your weight history.

If you are full but might want it later: “It looks lovely. Could I keep a portion for later?” Use this only if you actually want it, rather than accepting something you feel obliged to eat.

If someone keeps insisting: “Thank you, but I’ve decided. I’ll still join you for the celebration.” Say it calmly and repeat it if necessary. You can stay in the conversation without accepting another serving.

Stay part of the occasion

At a birthday gathering, you could help pass the plates, sing with the group or sit down for the chat. At a team lunch, choose something you want to eat and spend your attention on the people around you. There is no requirement to give an explanation each time your order differs.

If you often decline food, keeping the response warm and brief may feel more comfortable than making a public announcement about a diet. Equally, if you decide to have dessert, you do not need to label the day as ruined.

The same NHS Trust guidance discusses allowing room for favourite foods as one way of avoiding all-or-nothing thinking. The scripts here are practical examples to try, not a tested formula or a promise of weight loss.

Make one recurring situation easier

Think about the offer that comes up most often. It may be the daily drink order rather than the occasional cake. Decide your usual response before the message arrives: “I’m sorted for a drink, thanks,” or “I’ll order my own today.” You can change your mind when you genuinely want something.

For a shared snack table, you could choose what you would like, put it on a plate and sit with the group. If someone comments on your body or plate, a firmer boundary is reasonable: “I’d rather not discuss my weight while we’re eating.”

These choices should make workday eating easier. If they start to feel like rigid rules, or food brings frequent guilt, distress or loss of control, speak with an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.

Try this at the next office gathering

Pick one sentence you can say naturally. Use it once, then notice whether it helped you make your own choice and stay comfortable with your colleagues. That is a useful outcome even when nobody else notices.

You can enjoy food at work and take your health goals seriously. The aim is to have more say in your choices while keeping the parts of shared meals you value.

For a broader look at meals, sleep and everyday habits, the free 7-Day Metabolic Reset Guide offers a place to begin.

Source

Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust: Triggers (last edited 27 July 2026).
