One has two strains. Another has twenty. The bigger number looks more impressive, so it is tempting to assume it must be the better choice.<\/p>\n<p>But choosing a probiotic is not a numbers competition. A useful label should help you identify the strain, understand whether it can remain alive through storage and digestion, see how many live microorganisms are provided through the end of shelf life, and follow the product correctly. The best choice is the one that fits your purpose and has credible information behind it, not automatically the bottle with the loudest claim.<\/p>\n<p>Here are four things worth checking before you buy another probiotic supplement.<\/p>\n<h2>1. Does the label identify the exact probiotic strain?<\/h2>\n<p>The word &lt;em&gt;probiotic&lt;\/em&gt; describes a broad category of live microorganisms. It does not mean every probiotic works in the same way.<\/p>\n<p>A label may show only a general name such as &lt;em&gt;Lactobacillus&lt;\/em&gt; or &lt;em&gt;Bifidobacterium&lt;\/em&gt;. A more informative label gives the genus, species and strain designation. For example, the full name may end with a combination of letters or numbers that identifies the particular strain studied.<\/p>\n<p>Why does that matter? Benefits associated with one strain should not automatically be transferred to every strain in the same species. The World Gastroenterology Organisation recommends connecting a claimed benefit to the specific strain or strain combination and the dose supported by evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Start by asking what you want the probiotic to support. General digestive comfort, bowel regularity and support during or after a course of antibiotics are different purposes. A product should not be chosen simply because it contains many strains; the strains should make sense for the intended use.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Can the probiotic survive the journey through stomach acid?<\/h2>\n<p>A probiotic must still be alive when consumed, but that is only the beginning of its journey. It then encounters the acidic environment of the stomach, followed by bile and other conditions in the digestive tract.<\/p>\n<p>This is why acid and bile tolerance are useful product-quality considerations. If a strain cannot remain viable during digestion, fewer live microorganisms may reach the part of the gut where they are intended to act. Look for a clearly identified strain with supporting information about survival under digestive conditions or a delivery system designed to protect viability.<\/p>\n<p>There is an important distinction here: surviving stomach acid does not prove that a probiotic will cure bloating, constipation or another condition. Is the CFU count guaranteed through the expiry date?<\/h2>\n<p>CFU means colony-forming units, an estimate of the number of viable microorganisms in a serving. The number can be useful, but only when you know what it represents.<\/p>\n<p>Check whether the CFU amount is guaranteed through the expiry or best-before date. A number measured only at the time of manufacture may not tell you how many microorganisms remain alive when you actually take the product. Viability can decline during storage, and the rate of decline differs among strains and formulations.<\/p>\n<p>More CFU is not automatically better. The relevant question is whether the product provides the strain and viable amount associated with its intended benefit throughout its shelf life. With a multi-strain product, a large total CFU number may also tell you little about how much of each individual strain is present.<\/p>\n<p>So instead of asking, &quot;Which bottle has the biggest number?&quot; ask, &quot;Is the stated amount meaningful for this strain, this purpose and the date I will use it?&quot;<\/p>\n<h2>4. Are the directions, storage conditions and full formula clear?<\/h2>\n<p>Even a well-selected probiotic can be undermined by poor storage or incorrect use. Read the label for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The recommended serving size<\/li>\n<li>Whether it should be taken with food<\/li>\n<li>Refrigeration or room-temperature storage instructions<\/li>\n<li>Protection from heat, light and moisture<\/li>\n<li>The expiry or best-before date<\/li>\n<li>Added prebiotics, capsule materials, allergens and other ingredients<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Do not assume that all probiotics need refrigeration or that every shelf-stable product is equally resilient. Follow the current instructions on the package you purchase, especially in a warm climate.<\/p>\n<p>Added prebiotics may complement a probiotic by providing substrates used by gut microorganisms. They may also increase gas or bloating for some people, particularly when introduced quickly. This does not automatically mean the product is poor; it means the complete formula and your personal tolerance matter.<\/p>\n<h2>A simple five-minute comparison before you buy<\/h2>\n<p>When you are comparing two products, use this quick sequence:<\/p>\n<p>1. Write down the reason you are considering a probiotic.<\/p>\n<p>2. Find the complete strain name, not just the general bacterial group.<\/p>\n<p>3. Check for credible information about acid and bile tolerance or the delivery system.<\/p>\n<p>4. Confirm that the CFU count applies through the end of shelf life.<\/p>\n<p>5. Review the dose, storage instructions, expiry date and additional ingredients.<\/p>\n<p>Then choose one suitable product and observe your response consistently rather than changing several supplements, foods and routines at the same time. The strain, intended benefit, evidence-supported amount and viability through the end of shelf life matter more than choosing the largest number on the shelf.<\/p>\n<h3>Why is surviving stomach acid important?<\/h3>\n<p>Probiotics must remain viable as they pass through challenging digestive conditions. Follow the label and avoid assuming that a reaction after one dose proves success or failure.
